Fall @ Bishop Creek Canyon, Eastern Sierra, CAEven though California is not a popular place for fall colors for some reasons:
1. Spectacular fall colors are not everywhere, but mostly in the mountain areas.
2. Most of the trees are the evergreen pine trees, and evergreen drought resistant bushes and live oaks.
3. Some, if not most, of its residents do not know their mountains, and they speak strongly about their innocence of California. How often I would hear, "oh such beautiful fall colors, WE DO NOT HAVE THEM AT ALL HERE IN CALIFORNIA!" It's like one's person opinion already represents the whole of California. So, how can one blame if most people think indeed there are no fall colors in CA when its residents claim there are none at all?
North Lake, Bishop, CA
It is for that same reason probably that those who have not experienced the cooler summers in California coast would think that California is HOT HOT HOT because most of the people inland complained about being HOT all the time. But for the well traveled Californians, they know the macro climate existing, where the weather along the coast and further inland to the desert can be 30-40 degrees different! It is not more about South vs North weather in the Pacific West, but more about West to East drastic difference in weather because the East is already farther from the moderation of the cool ocean water.
In the Bishop Creek Canyon area, the fall colors are last week of Septemeber and first week of October. It can vary a little bit, but one can get updated fall colors in the area from BLM Bishop, from Cal Photo, or from California Fall Color. Right now, these links may not look updated yet, because it is still severla weeks from intense fall color display. But come middle of Septemeber to first week of October, you will see a lot of fall updates in this site.
If you are in California, and wonder where to experience beautiful fall colors, and may not have the time to fly to other places, the Eastern Sierra is just around your neighborhood, waiting to be explored.
