The Pelican

Pelicans are large water birds in the family Pelecanidae. They are characterised by a long beak and large throat pouch, used in catching, and draining water from, their prey.

These photos were taken from our trip to Catalina Island, California. We were in line waiting for the underwater boat ride, when this pelican decided to put a little show in front of all of us. He landed gracefully, and as soon as he noticed a couple of us pulled our camera to take pictures, he stood still, stayed for a long time and enjoyed the attention !

  1. I am thinking:

Who is more handsome? Me, or the Pelican?

  7. I remember viewing your pixs of your bday trip to Catalina Island, buddy, and thinking, wow, what a beautiful place that is! I wanna go there someday, too! Glad this pelican put on quite a show for you guys:) I think he/she is just lovely. Check out that powerful beak! Everytime I see pixs of pelicans (coz we have no pelicans in WV), I remember a poem I learned in grade school, many moons ago, that goes something like this:

A wonderful bird is the pelican
His bill can hold more than his belican (belly can)
He can take in his beak
    Food enough for a week
But I'm darned if I see
How the helican (hell he can) :)

That poem always makes me smile. Your post and your photos just did, too. Thanks for sharing, buddy Chay!
