What's in a name?

This was lifted from my blog, Poetic Murmurings, before i changed it to a photoblog. It's a long read, if i bore you to death i do apologize.

I always wonder what it is in a name? Do we have name simply to identify us from the next person? Does a name say something about us, our personality, our character? I have no answer to these questions but, i can tell you what's in my name...

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
by any other name would smell as sweet."

----Shakespear's "Romeo and Juliet" , II,ii, 1-2

Rowena, it is of old German origin meaning fame and happiness. It is also an old English name meaning slender and fair. I read it somewhere it also means gray hair. I do not know about fame but i am happy. Yes, I am slender but more of brown-ish than fair in complexion. Definitely, the gray hairs are becoming evident to show off wisdom (ha!ha!ha!) than my advancing age...i love to think.

Most of the research i did can be summarized what my name says about me.

You are energetic and courageous. You stand up for your beliefs and for what you desire. You are independent, strong willed and fiercely competitive when needed although your ambition is tempered with patience. You maintain a positive attitude and with a more organized or practical approach to life material success is very likely. Your immensely loving and generous nature brings joy into peoples lives and ensures your happiness.

You are very charming... dangerously so. You have the potential to break a lot of hearts. You know what you want, how to get it, and that you will get it. You have the power to rule the world. Let's hope you're a benevolent dictator!

You are very intuitive and wise. You understand the world better than most people. You also have a very active imagination. You often get carried away with your thoughts. You are prone to a little paranoia and jealousy. You sometimes go overboard in interpreting signals. You are usually the best at everything ... You strive for perfection. You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.

Are these discription true, one might ask. In all honesty i don't know. If you know me, please tell me so. If you don't, then i'm afraid you have to know me at your own risk........

How about you? Do you know what's in your name?

  1. Hi Eng!

Funny how sometimes we would be interested to know things like that --- like what your name means. I stumbled upon some Chinese calligraphy with my name written in Chinese. It says that my name means "To add good things" and "Profit". Whatever that means. Well, I will try to "add good things" in my blog and get the "profit" out of it. LOL.

  3. Chinese names have their meaning in each of the character.
There are three characters in my name.

The first is my surname. It means thunder, but physically, the upper part of 雷 means rain, the lower portion means field, that's why rainfield.

The second one 南 means south.

The third one 添 means add.

i.e. another son in 南洋, an old name for the Malay Archipelago, the Malay Peninsula or for Southeast Asia.
